Art Therapy on Hudson is a creative space located in the village of Hastings-on-Hudson,
twenty miles north of New York City overlooking the Hudson River. My name is Mia de Bethune.
I'm an artist, writer, and licensed creative arts therapist with twenty years of experience in the field
who provides experiential psychotherapy through art, art journaling, and
somatic knowing to individuals and groups online and in my studio.
I am registered with the American Art Therapy Association, certified by the American Art Therapy Credentials Board, and licensed by the NY State Dept. of Education. I teach art therapy on the faculty of the NYU program, where I received my training, and act as a program advisor to the postgraduate Child and Adolescent Program at the Westchester Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy. I'm a certified Somatic Experiencing and Integral Somatic Psychology practitioner and training assistant, also trained in Inner Relational Focusing, Embodied Meditation, Karuna® Holy Fire®, Usui, and Transcendental Reiki healing. Although a special focus has been working with adolescents and children in foster care using trauma-based therapy, I have experience with varied populations including hospice and bereavement, psychiatric settings, adult groups, schools, and museums. I'm currently a Ph.D. candidate in expressive arts therapy at Lesley University, Cambridge, MA conducting research on embodiment in art therapy.
*******
Often the most difficult feelings are too hard to express with words. In art, feelings can be seen visually and felt tangibly through the creation of images and objects. Once revealed in this way emotional problems which were previously unspoken may be discussed and worked through. My therapeutic background is grounded in object relations combining elements of attachment theory, ego and self-psychology, trauma work, and an eclectic mix of humanism, Jungian symbolism, narrative therapy, mindfulness, meditative breathing, and bodywork. I have training in embodied methods mentioned above as well as Guided Drawing, Focusing-Oriented Art Therapy, and other somatic art-making methods. You do not need to be artistically gifted to engage in art therapy. A nonjudgemental, accepting approach allows exploration of your natural creativity and helps foster a better understanding of yourself and your world. As a writer and artist, I encourage the exploration of both image-making and storytelling for an integrative path to healing.
Ultimately the psyche wants to move toward healing and integration. I respect the power of the unspoken,
the unconscious, the forming image to lead one toward clarity.
