I am a certified Somatic Experiencing and Integral Somatic Psychology practitioner and training assistant. I am also trained in Inner Relationship Focusing, Embodied Meditation, and various Reiki healing methods. I combine all of these to provide an integrative approach to healing, which can be combined with experiential art therapy and is informed by my analytic and relational training as a psychotherapist. This work can be done on as well as off the body; in-person and online. Currently, I am seeing most clients online via Zoom and only a select few in the studio.
The Somatic Experiencing® method is a body-oriented approach to the healing of trauma and other stress disorders. It is the life’s work of Dr. Peter Levine, resulting from his multidisciplinary study of stress physiology, psychology, ethology, neuroscience, indigenous healing practices, and medical biophysics, with over 45 years of successful clinical application.
The SE approach releases traumatic shock, which is key to transforming PTSD, and the wounds of emotional and early developmental attachment trauma.
SE offers a framework to assess where a person is “stuck” in the fight, flight, or freeze response and provides clinical tools to resolve these fixated physiological states. It provides effective skills appropriate to a variety of healing professions including mental health, medicine, physical and occupational therapies, bodywork, addiction treatment, first responders, education, and others.
Integral Somatic Psychology® has been developed by Dr. Raja Selvam, a senior SE trainer, as a way to locate emotions within the physical body and to expand the body's capacity to tolerate painful emotions and sensations. ISP uses principles of polarity therapy and energy within the body to create greater connection and access to feeling. ISP considers that greater access to emotions in the whole body provides more information for the brain to process cognitively, and thus greater ability to holistically resolve trauma. ISP methods mesh well with SE as well as art therapy.
Inner Relationship Focusing® was developed from Dr. Eugene Gendlin's Focusing process, by linguist Dr. Anne Weiser Cornell, to enhance the process of dialogue that a person can have with their own body. This dialogue can allow sensations and emotions to emerge within the safety of a relationship with a therapist or focusing companion. Difficult emotions and aspects of self may emerge in this reflective process that honor one's personal language and can help resolve trauma.
Embodied Meditation® is the practice developed by Ralph Steele, LMFT, a Buddhist monk and Insight Meditation teacher. It is informed by his training in both Somatic Experiencing and Integral Somatic Psychology. This practice brings embodied sensations and emotional awareness to contemplative practice which can at times lead to being less grounded in the body.
