Sound Baths

1/28/2014

This Sunday I had the pleasure of experiencing a Sound Bath at Frank Bosco's music therapy practice on West 20th street in Chelsea.   The Sound Bath was run, performed, and created by Katie Down - I'm am not sure of the correct term, but all seem to apply - who appears to be a remarkable musician as well as therapist and healer.   I purchased a gift certificate for my daughter, who at 23 is a stressed out young professional and thought it would be a nice gift for the new year.  We were not disappointed.   Surrounded by about 12 others we lay on cushions in a darkened room as Katie played a series of luminous glass bowls, which resonated deeply so that your entire body felt like it was being cleansed of all the winter muck from sinus problems to anxiety to sciatica to depression.  At times the sound was almost overwhelming - and we were encouraged to get up and leave if that was the case - but in the end, as an energy practitioner, it had the effect for me of opening everything up.   The hour long "bath" ended with Katie and Frank individually "tuning" each person with tuning forks and then a spontaneous tonal chorus accompanied by a harmonium where we all responded to each other's tones across the room.  Everyone seemed loath to leave.  Katie played her flute, as we slowly pulled on down coats and thick boots to go back out into the Polar Vortex, feeling much more relaxed and warm inside.

They do this once a month and at $20 it's a bargain!

Exciting Beginnings to the New Year

PictureMandala created after a group energy meditation.
2014 began with great energy at
Art Therapy on Hudson...

On Saturday 1/11 a group of us gathered for a day long workshop to explore the significance of mandalas as healing images and learn some basic meditations using energy healing.

Combining these two modalities proved to be synchronistic in a number of ways.   Trained as a Reiki Master and as a MARI/Mandala Assessment Practitioner, I lead the group in some simple meditations visualizing energy and light.  We drew a number of mandalas after each meditation and then explored possible significance of the mandalas using text from Susanne Fincher's wonderful book Coloring Mandalas: For Insight, Healing and Self-Expression.   We also explored the significance of chakras in terms of color and energy.  The group was surprised by the number of parallels and connections that appeared between us in terms of color, feeling and the amount of energy we created as a group.   We all left with a feeling of well being and greater insight.   What a great way to bring in the new year!

I will run this workshop again in the spring for those who are interested.

A repeat of our favorite workshop!
Small Book Making - occurred the very next day 1/12 with a lively group of six women.

We made small accordion books, triangle books and books with affirmations for the New Year.
They are beautiful little gems - each one of them - ready to be slipped in a pocket or purse with a saying or series of pictures.  One of the women decided she would make a book out of watercolor paper to house a series of small paintings.  The covers were made from fabric, handmade paper, hand-painted paper, origami, recycled cake boxes and all sorts of odds and ends.  The perfect activity for a perpetual pack rat like myself.  With several therapists present (two art therapists and a social worker) we discussed the possibilities for using this project with clients from prison inmates to teenagers.

A book workshop for Japanese Punch Stab books is in the works for the spring.
